Tuition and Other Fees
There are differential composition (tuition) fees for local and non-local stuents.
Non-local students are persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa / entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration.
The composition fee for the academic year 2007-2008 is HK$42,100 for all local students. The fee for 2008-2009 has yet to be decided on Government's advice, but we do not expect it to differ significantly from the current fee.
For non-local (i.e. non-Hong Kong) students, the composition fee for the academic year 2008-2009 will be HK$100,000. In addition to the composition fee, all new students must pay a deposit of HK$350 known
as "caution money". If there are no claims against the caution
money, it will be used to pay the HK$350 graduation fee upon your graduation,
or will be refunded if you leave the University before graduation.
All new students will also have to pay an entrance fee and an annual subscription of a total of HK$ 240 to the Students' Union. These fees may
be revised upwards.
General Expenses
Besides budgeting for pocket money and traveling expenses, you should
also allow for expenditure on textbooks, writing materials and, in some
cases, items of equipments.
Overseas Applicants
If you are a non-local applicant, you will be required to show that
you are able to support yourself financially throughout the course.
It is very difficult to provide a precise estimate of the likely cost
because it varies from one person to another, depending on the type
of accommodation selected, and other factors. For students living in
residential halls, a minimum of HK$75,000 per year will be required
to cover food, lodging and general living expenses for the academic
year 2008-2009. The actual hall charges for 2008-2009 will be finalised by the summer of year 2008. Fees are likely to adjust upward annually.
Academic Awards
Around 1,200 scholarships and prizes are available for undergraduate
students. The value of individual awards ranges from HK$1,000 to
around HK$100,000, and the combined value of awards each year reaches
HK$11 million. These scholarships and prizes are awarded on both academic
merit and/or other specific conditions stipulated by the donors.
Some scholarships are advertised, and undergraduates can apply directly.
Other scholarships and prizes are not publicised, and Heads of the applicable
departments or Deans of Faculties are requested to recommend suitable
nominees. For more details, please visit the Student
Academic Awards website.
Financial Assistance
The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) gives guidance and advice to students on financial planning
and budget management, and provides assistance for government grant
and loan applications. To supplement the government scheme, the University also offers small scale means-tested
financial assistance to students with financial hardship.
