TUITION FEE, COST OF LIVING and SCHOLARSHIPS

The tuition fee for students entering in the academic year 2009- 2010 is HK$100,000 (approximately US$12,900) for international (i.e. non-Hong Kong ID card holder) students. This is very low in comparison with most of the international universities on a par with HKU. Although Hong Kong is an expensive city, this is primarily because of the high cost of property and accommmodation here.

International students need not worry about this, as they are provided with a place in a hall of residence (at around US$1,200 per year) for the first year (and will endeavour to find a subsidized place thereafter). Nevertheless, general expenses in Hong Kong could cost as much as HK$75,000 (approximately US$9,700) for one year, depending, of course, on how you live!!!

There are entrance scholarships available for top students, to cover the costs, or part of them, of education at The University of Hong Kong. These scholarships, which usually last for three years (subject to you passing your exams!), have been provided by our very generous benefactors, who continue to support our University and our students, furthering our development as a leading international university. There are also around 1,500 scholarships for students who have already entered the University, which usually also depend on academic achievement as you go through your studies here. Finally, there are scholarships to support your travel and other expenses if you are successful in obtaining a place at another university for a year (or semester) abroad.
